Funcity Sunshine Darkzone Gokart About Fun City

Fun City Go Karts was the original brilliant idea of Darren Shaw, after seeing some great Go Kart Entertainment venues in Texas USA in Oct 1989. Darren came back to Australia and started a partnership with Jim Voliotis and his mate Shaun.  Darren and Jim had been friends for some time and they both shared a passion with Super Sedan Racing.

They introduced Geoff Trewin into the partnership after Shaun left, and built the original "Fun City Go Karts" in Tottenham,  on Sunshine road, where the Westco Jeans outlet is today. Fun City Go Karts opened to the Public on the 6th December 1990. In 1991 Darren and Geoff built a GoKart Track in Woodridge Queensland, a western suburb of Brisbane, that was very simular to Tottenham. We later sold the Track to Jim for his third share of Tottenham and his friend Ian who ran the business for a while before retiring. Jim has gone back to tow trucks in Qld, another one of his passions. Darren and Geoff also opened an outdoor Gokart Track at the Laverton outdoor market (Rubbles & Riches), we also sold this business off to Ian after he came back from Queensland.

During this time we put in a laser game at Tottenham called Zone 3 (now known as Darkzone).
This proved to be a good investment, so they ventured into the unknown and established other Laser Games centres. The first at 110 Bourke street Melbourne, where they had a short term lease on the building and Darren built a Bloody good Laser Game there.

This site eventually moved to the first floor at 140 Bourke street Melbourne above the Hoyts Cinemas, again Darren built another bloody good Arena.

Opening a Laser Game in George street Sydney was the next, right in the heart of the cinema district, very big ballsy move. Introducing some new financial partners into the scene, Jerry and Peter were Builders from the East looking for a Tax Break. They got it, when Darren pulled out of managing both sites, Sydney and Bourke street. Some 8 months later the sites closed under the Management of Geoff and his then wife Anne.. They forgot the basics in business. (look after the customer first, not your pocket).
After 3 years at Tottenham Fun City was unable to renew the Lease on the old factory that it was occupying, so then started to look around for a new venue.

The Old Pilkington Glass (Dowell Aluminium) Factory on Ballarat road Braybrook was found for sale.

To help fund the purchase of the Pilkington Glass site in Braybrook, Darren and Geoff sold a block of land at Somerton that they had earlier purchased to build a speedway complex on.
They employed heaps of workers from the west and started to strip the old building, and then with the help of a Builder (Ivor Godsel), They built the place known for years to come as "Fun City Entertainment Complex".

This place turned out to be great, it provided entertainment for lots of locals for years to come.
In 1995 Darren and Geoff came to amicable dissolution to their Partnership over discrepencies in accounting practises by his then wife Anne.

Geoff kept the Go Kart Business and Darren kept the Laser Game Business along with a pepercorn rental deal on cheap rent on the Laser Game section for many years to come. and Darren would forego any claim on the building in the future.

Darren then purchased other businesses that were established in the building like the Fun City Billiard Hall and the Victory Lane Sports Bar.

Darren renovated the Sports Bar into a large night club facility and called it "Southern Star Saloon".
This place humped for years, it held great bands both Fridays and Saturday nights and was home to a lot of great nights for a lot of people.

Sadly Darren sold most of his interests in the business in July 2002 to a couple (Ian & Julie). Darren retained ownership of all the Trade Marks and Business names associated with Fun City and licenced the use of them by others at the complex.
Even more Sadly, Ian and Julie also failed to get along with the new owner of the building, Anne. (Geoff had divorced Anne)

During a period of time in the 90's Anne and Geoff had sold the Go Karts to a couple of newlyweds, (Debra & Adrian Horne) they were really nice people and called the Karts business (Fun City Naskarts), but went belly up about a year later as they could not afford the repayments on the gokart business and the huge rent.

Anne's company resumed ownership of the Go kart Business from Debra and Adrian and then reopened as Western Auto Indoor Raceway dropping the Fun City GoKart name. Also during this Period (when they had sold the karts) Geoff and Anne opened an Auto Store called Western Auto Parts in Geelong road Footscray, this place was destroyed by a suspicious fire some months later.

They reopened the Auto store in the front rooms of the Ballarat road complex, now known as kam Auto Parts. Some time after Geoff went on to open a Speedway Complex in Bacchus Marsh.
After a few years Ian and Julie got Darren to come back and run the businesses AGAIN as they had lost interest due to the constant bickering from the Western Auto Raceway Business (operated by Anne).

In 2006 negotiations continued due to the breakdown over the failure of the landord company to issue the new leases to Julie and Ian that had been promised to them.

The New Management team headed by Darren continued to renovate and spend lots of money on the infrastucture of the premises for the next 2 years, everyone thought that Anne would come to her senses and issue the leases and replace the Asbestos roof of the building.

Sadly after clocking up over $140,000.00 in solicitors bills  and $190,000.00 in renovations, Ian and Julie pulled the pin on their investment at 234 Ballarat road Braybrook, as the Asbestos did not get removed and Anne did not want to give them the new Leases as promised. The place closed to the public at the end of May 2008.

Darren had no choice but to pick up the remaining assets he had in the place, like Business names, Trade Marks and interlectual property etc. He also purchased some of the remaining assets from Ian and Julie and started the New Fun City with his Partner Angie, down the road at 486 Ballarat road Sunshine.

The relocated Fun City Opened in November 2008 after having spent over 1.1 million dollars on fitting out this brand new venue with state of the art facilities, catering for all ages in a vast range of activities. The new Fun City Complex has over 30 people employed with a great deal of them being family members, adding to the great nature of how they care for the guests that continue to enjoy these great new facilities at the Fun City complex in Sunshine.

Fun City wishes Anne, Barry, Charlie and her staff all the best at the old building.
